My definition of a hidden community one that interacts with society daily without society knowing the exact issues it faces and what can be done to help them. This does not mean that society is oblivious to the community but the knowledge it possesses is insufficient for them to consider them visible. My hidden community is Dyslexics. Dyslexia is a common condition affecting the way the brain processes written and spoken language. (Understood.org, 2014) Characteristics of Dyslexia are difficulties in phonological awareness, verbal memory and processing speed. (Das.org.sg, n.d.) With that in mind, I feel that we must be patient with Dyslexics but we must also recognize that we cannot have the same expectations of them compared to people without these disabilities. We need to be respectful of their condition. This goes for all hidden communities because they are discriminated against which is unfair to them because they did not choose Dyslexia and there is no permanent solution for Dyslexia. Respecting and accepting that this community’s presence in society, making them more receptive and boosting their self-esteem and minimize deficits made by Dyslexia.
