In my perspective, based on the knowledge I have acquired, culture is basically a specific way of living for a particular society or civilization. According to the Centre for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition, the term culture refers to the cognitive constructs, collective patterns of conduct and communication and affective comprehension that are learnt through the process known as Socialization. In this essay the two distinct cultures (Saudi Arabia and Trinidad and Tobago) will be explored through three characteristics of culture. In Trinbago, there are two season; rainy and dry. The men and women dress very similarly. If the day is hot, women wear short pants, tank tops, rompers and short dresses and on their feet they may put on slippers or sandals, whereas men are clothed in khakis, Light tee-shirts slippers also or slip in whole shoes and vests. In Saudi Arabia, the belief of polygamy is practiced because it is part of the Islamic faith and also because the men are frequent travellers. The term basically means when a man marries more than one wife. Though heavily practiced, some Saudi women are opposed to the idea that their husbands could remarry another woman. Their justifications are as follows; they treat the new wife better than the first one and they may forget about the first wife altogether and this may result in a financial cutback and less support for their children. Whereas others are full support of the idea, they say it eliminates spinsterhood. It is in their tradition that if a women is 30 years of age she is involuntarily a spinster and prefers to be married and have the spend a little bit of time with her rather than none at all. Some women even go to the extent that she will choose the ‘supposed’ wife and even are present at the proposal. In Trinidadian culture, polygamy is prohibited and deemed morally unacceptable in the Western Hemisphere and monogamy is replaced and practiced. Monogamy is martial binding of one man to one woman. The main religion is Roman Catholicism. Pentecostals values and beliefs stem and are contributed by their pastor’s or preacher’s sermons. They live in accordance to the biblical scriptures. Monogamy and the traditional nuclear family are preached and are values that support economic
