They include young men and women visualizing members as role models. These young people recruited tend to perpetrate these crimes within their own neighborhoods. Gang crimes are violent as a means of the defendant establishing an image for themselves. The logic of today’s gangs is seen as the greater extent of violence, the more respect you will receive from senior members. Gang members know what colors are affiliated with their gangs so if a person from a rival “set” came onto their “turf” then violence could quickly erupt. Hand signs, another form of gang identification used can also trigger gang crime if displayed improperly.
