Crime and gangs go hand in hand. They’ve existed for hundreds of years and will be here hundreds of years from now. The earliest gangs date back to the 1600s when the Italian mafia were established and in the 1800s for the Chinese Triads. Surprisingly, the two have more in common than one may conceive. Both groups originated because of resistance within their countries. The Italian mafia initiated while Sicily was still under the rule of Spain and the Chinese Triad’s during the anti-Manchu resistance. These groups, motivated due to the heinous acts the aristocracy of these two countries were inflicting upon citizens. Today the number of gangs has grown at an exponential rate since similar circumstances within their communities exist.

They include young men and women visualizing members as role models. These young people recruited tend to perpetrate these crimes within their own neighborhoods. Gang crimes are violent as a means of the defendant establishing an image for themselves. The logic of today’s gangs is seen as the greater extent of violence, the more respect you will receive from senior members. Gang members know what colors are affiliated with their gangs so if a person from a rival “set” came onto their “turf” then violence could quickly erupt. Hand signs, another form of gang identification used can also trigger gang crime if displayed improperly. In the textbook Gangs Theory Practice and Research, Matthew David O’Deane states the following: “ It is deemed very important by some police agencies to address gang identification because addressing the more visible indicators of a gang’s presence that are observable by the citizens who live in the area helps protect the neighborhood”.
