Classism in the African American Community

How are African Americans categorized by classism in the Houston area? Class Action defines classism as “differential treatment based on social class or perceived social class. Classism is the systematic oppression of a subordinated class group to an advantage and strengthens the dominant class groups. It’s the systematic assignment of characteristics of worth and ability based on social class.” Classism is an interrelated spectrum that categorizes people based on economic level, educational opportunities, and career position. As stated above, classism affects all people, focusing on a more specific ethnic group in Houston, Texas, African American; classism divides this group of people into three separate groups. The three different cases are defined as the working class, the middle class, and the ruling class. Statistics from Class Action also states also states that Houston’s the fourth largest city in America with 30 percent of the population considering themselves of African descent. That is over one million people placed in the 30-percentile bracket. African Americans in Houston had a late start in building economically due to slavery. There are many solutions to solving the social problem of classism. To eliminate classism as a social problem action must be taken by all people. The most effective way of being proactive is to advocate ending classism by teaming up with advocacy groups. Some African American tends to feel that racism should be compared to classism. I believe that classism is greater the racism. Other races to deal recession not only the black community. Some other races aren’t used to being poor and are now receiving also. The African American community needs to realize that there is other lower-class in other races not only in blacks. In the lower class of African American there are not enough parents that value an education. Students living in poverty do not have the same experiences as student of the upper class. They often miss out on opportunities to help develop their skills and academics which, there has to be a personal responsibility and instructional accountability. There has to be a meeting of the two. Not just resting the blame and the victim but also saying at there is some structures to build
