Charismatic Leadership
Charisma has been defined in many ways. Moreover, the definitions have enough consistency to make charisma a useful concept in understanding and participating leadership. Charisma is a Greek word that means “divinely inspired gift.” In the study of leadership, charisma is a special quality of leaders whose, purposes, powers, and extraordinary determination differentiates them from others. Generally, the term charismatic means to have a charming and colorful personality. Charisma is a positive and compelling quality that makes many others want to be led by the person that has it. They also influence others because of the skills, abilities, and knowledge they possess. Another characteristic is their ability to get their workers excited about their work and “experience job involvement” (DuBrin, 2013). A study found that workers who rate their supervisors high in charisma also have a high job satisfaction with their supervisors. There are a number of different approaches, or styles to leadership and management that are based on different assumptions and theories. The style a person uses is based on a combination of their beliefs, values and preferences, as well as the organizational culture and norms, which will encourage some styles and discourages others. They serve mainly their own interest and exercise few restraints on their own use of power. The force self-serving goals on constituents, and they offer consideration and support to group members only when it includes their own goals (Dubrin, 2013).
