Characteristics of being an academically successful college student include being engaged, making connections to support themselves, having more internal than external motivation, actively learning, having a confident attitude, managing stress and maintaining a sense of well-being, using time and organization effectively, and being able to self-regulate. Being engaged means being an active learner; blindly doing assignments and only retaining information for tests is poor engagement. It takes effort and hard work to be engaged. It also goes beyond the classroom; extra-curricular activities and organizations help a student to stay engaged. With engagement comes supportive connections; being active in your academic area provides peers, instructors, and others who can help you be academically successful. Internal motivation comes from what a person wants to do after college; if one is excited about their plans after college, the more motivated one will be to stay focused on their academics. External motivation comes from factors such as family, scholarships, significant others, or figuring out what to do next. These factors don’t provide the right kind of motivation for students to stay focused; these provide passive participation in academics. Active learning involves studying or reading to learn the information, not just reading the chapter to completion. The goal of active reading is to understand the text.
