This leaflet is going to discuss the main ideas of social work. It will cover different topic areas such as concepts, history, values and ethics, theory, intervention and good social work practice for example anti-discriminatory practice. To understand what being a social worker is about it may be useful to learn a definition of social work. According to an article ‘What is social work?’ By R, Truell (2014, p1) examines the newest definition, by the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) and the International Association of Schools of Social Work. “Social work is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people.” To summarise the aim is to help those in need, to give control and freedom to choose how they live their lives. Poor Law in 1563 includes three types of people. First, the ‘deserving’ poor, including; ill, children and the old who would be given clothing, money and food.
