A person having the ability to know who they are leads to success because they know their limits and how far they can take things. The second characteristic of being a good leader is self-direction. Self-direction is person that knows how to keep a leveled head. A person who has confidence that they can get things done, stay organized, and calm are examples of someone who is self-directed. The third one is Vision. Having a vision is the ability to see what needs to happen, setting a goal to make it happen, and accomplishing that goal. The fourth one is the ability to motivate. Being able to persuade people that the task their taking on is important and make them want to do it instead of just helping a person is a good example of characteristics of a leader. The final characteristic of a good leader is social awareness. Social awareness is the ability to understand social networks. Knowing what is going on and who the competition is. The reason it can be defined differently, depending on the person, is because there are so many different types of leaders. American Society of Association Executives (2013) listed eight types of leadership styles. These styles are:
1. Charismatic- A charismatic leader has the ability to influence people through their personalities,
2. Innovative- An innovative leader has the ability to see something is wrong and fix it. Innovative leaders are also always bringing something new to the table.
3. Command and Control- a command and control leader is someone who takes rules seriously. They go by the rules and they expect others to do the same.
4. Laisseze-Faire- A Laisseze-faire leader can be very trusting. They are not always involved in work directly but expect people to excel in their work
5. Pace Setter- A pace setter leader, expects big things. They set high standards for themselves and their surroundings.
6. Servant- a servant leader is some who is in the background. They proved the tools that are expected for the job to get done.
