Introduction:
(Aguilar, 2012) Suggests that the ideal work is a perceptually available, which is the idea that the ideal worker has no responsibilities outside of work and prioritises work above all else. (Aguilar, 2012) Also argues that the lives of the modern day worker has evolved with time however societies view on work has not which in turn has resulted In tension between the employers social lives and work expectations. Others such as (Acker, 1990) suggest that an ideal worker has expectations and norms which are associated with certain occupations that build images of abstract, gender neutral workers that have no obligations outside the work place. According to this statement the ideal worker will have no obligations outside of work

A drain layer is an individual whom fits, installs and repairs drainage within the boundary of one’s property. I have chosen to use this occupation for this assignment as Drain Layers are in need in quake damaged areas in New Zealand. According to (NewZealand.govt.nz, 2015) Plumbers, Gas fitters and Drain layers are in high demand in areas such as Christchurch as a result of the devastating earthquakes which destroyed much of Christchurch’s infrastructure. The data that I am using in this assignment has been gathered from various different sources including seek.co.nz, trademejobs.co.nz and CareersNZ. This assignment will explore the requirement of employer’s ideal worker around the occupation of Drain Laying and why these norms in terms of the ideal worker exists and have formed around the occupation of Drain …show more content…
Careers New Zealand also list the ideal personal skills one requires to be successful in this industry. Included in this list of skill are such things as reliable, motivated, skills in using equipment and patience. Ideal worker. As (Acker, 1990) states an ideal worker has expectations and norms which are associated with certain occupations that build images of abstract, gender neutral workers that have no obligations outside the work place. in the case of a drain layer skills such as patience and may be for some individuals not a natural occurrence especially as it has become more common for individuals has out of work obligations. Reliability of the ideal worker may also be hindered by out of work obligations. Another key aspect of an ideal worker as stated by (Aguilar, 2012) is the ability for the individual to be able prioritise work above all else. This can be seen as a problem if the potential employee was a solo parent and was unable to attend work due to such prioritises as a sick
