When a leader agrees with the old adage " no man is an island" and decides to delegate power to team members, it creates a situation where the leader can have more time to develop new plans and strategies for growth and the ability to supervise the contributions of each team member through team leaders. It also empowers team members to take initiative when making organizational decisions. An example of a leader that delegates power can be seen from my employer Aviation Safeguards at the Los Angeles international airport. There is a lead or supervisor for every position covered to oversee the job and to ensure that employees perform their duties appropriately. All questions and problems encountered at the job site is first referred to the supervisor for solutions and decisions making and will only be escalated to upper management if out of the scope of the leads authority. A good leader learns how to communicate and share ideas with his/her team, joins in the brainstorming decision making process and encourages his team to be bold, innovative and have a unique mindset that will always put them in an advantage against competitors. This type of leadership skills can be seen performed by Jason Y. Shay in the book written by Gen & Kelly Tanabe "50 successful Ivy League application essays." (Ch.14 pg.128-130). He gives a description of his interpersonal relationship with his teammates and the friends he made from Shanghai and Accra and how they shared ideas. These are some of the concepts that makes good leadership including others such as be charismatic, be willing to learn and accept mistakes, be flexible ,kind ,caring and possess critical thinking capabilities.
