president must be a man or woman of good character whom the American people can trust to be honest, forthcoming, and operating with integrity. Lincoln, while being a strong political leader, was also a good man who based his life in principles of honesty, integrity, and humility. Everyone knows the President Lincoln was always referred to as “Honest Abe.” Throughout his presidency, he proved to history that he wasn’t just a man with a job, he was a man with a vision for a nation, this vision saw a nation with the same opportunities and liberties given to all it’s inhabitants. His character and beliefs about life gave him the passion to pursue change in the United States. He understood that there was a bigger picture, it wasn’t just about a war or an amendment, it was personal for so many Americans who were living without the equality, life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness the constitution promised to protect. A U.S. president needs to be a man or woman with integrity not only in front of the people but behind closed doors. President Bill Clinton did not exemplify this characteristic when he had an affair with White House employee, Monica Lewinsky. Though it is true, all presidents are indeed human, President Clinton made a mistake that cost him his presidency as he betrayed the public’s trust by proving himself to be someone lacking good character. The President owes it to him or herself to be a person of integrity behind the scenes and in front of the camera. He/she must uphold the laws of the nation and remain loyal to their families and those they love. It is also important that the President fights for the things that he/she believes are important. President Obama believed that in order for there to be equality in America, there needed to be marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples. His personal belief in the legalization of gay marriage
