“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”- John C. Maxwell. You are given the key to the United States, with this key comes great power. Do you believe you would use that power to help, defend, and treat others? Or would you use it selfishly? When people are given a leadership role, it can sometimes be uncertain what can happen. For example, Adolf Hitler was a leader who many believe was the worst leader in history. He was a man who thought of himself and world domination. These are some qualities of an unfit leader. More qualities of a bad leader are arrogance, lack of integrity, and using fear to get people to listen to you. The responsibilities of a good leader are the opposite of an unfit one. A good leader should …show more content…
Owell did this by using different qualities that make up a bad leader. One quality he wrote the government to have was to be over controlling and make it so nobody has their own opinions and the Party can’t be trusted. Winston thinks about how the thought police or telescreens control, by if you say, do, or think the wrong thing you could be instantly killed. It states in the novel, “It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away.” The Party controls how you have to act by just watching you and having you fear them. Winston realizes that the Party controls everything and never tells you the truth. He finds that the Party is able to control the past, present, and the future by controlling historical records, language, and your thoughts. Winston thinks to himself, “Day by day and almost minute by minute the past was brought up to date...All history was a palimpsest, scraped clean and reinscribed exactly as often as was necessary. In no case would it have been possible, once the deed was done, to prove that any falsification had taken place. ” He knows the Party changes the past since he works in the Ministry of Truth. Winston edits and rewrites history in different forms of media to show the people the Party’s version of the past and what is happening in the present. He knows that the …show more content…
The people Odysseus leads disobeys him and kills the cows after Eurylochus convinces them too. Even though they killed the cows Odysseus still wanted to protect the people who had betrayed him. They were not afraid to go against his rules in a time when they were starving. In 1984, if you had gone against the Party and been caught you would be tortured and eventually killed. Odysseus uses his power in a way where even though they did not follow his directions, he told them he disapproved but still helped them survive. Another example that shows how Odysseus was a good leader is when Odysseus prays at the beginning of the story. He knows that the men are starving, and instead of forcing someone to go get food, he goes to pray to the gods about getting away. In paragraph 1 it says, “One day, therefore, I went up inland that I might pray heaven to show me some means of getting away.” He could make someone go die while trying to go get food, but he respects them and tries to help

He tricked the Cyclops into eating and drinking heavily, and while it was asleep his crew drove a charred stake into its eye. Overnight, Odysseus comes up with the idea to tie them up to the undersides of the Cyclops’s rams. The following morning, the Cyclops lets his livestock out, and Odysseus and his crew manage to escape to their boat. Had Odysseus not come up with this idea, his crew and him would have been stuck in the Cyclops’s cave and likely killed by him. This excerpt is another example of how great Odysseus was as a…

In The Odyssey, Homer writes of Odysseus, a good leader. Odysseus does make mistakes, for example when he leaves Ismarus he says, “I sacked the city, killed the men” and then he takes the riches and wives as plunder (9. 46-47). In this situation Odysseus acts similar to a pirate and goes against the Greek value of order. Also, when Eurylochus and the crew asks to land on the island of the Sun God’s cattle Odysseus says, “I’m one against all, the upper hand is yours” even though this island is where Odysseus was told he will have their greatest disaster (12. 322-323). Odysseus giving in leads to the death of his entire crew and ship.…

In this vignette, Odysseus blamed the god of gods, Zeus, for letting him sleep and his men to get away with murdering the kine. This action was very un-heroic of Odysseus, as he should have interpreted this situation better and not blame Zeus for something he did not do. Even though Odysseus did not treat the situation as he should have, there has been other times he has been very heroic and has respected greatly honored gods or people. For instance, when Odysseus traveled to the underworld, he, “Swore to sacrifice a black lamb, handsomest of all our flock... for Tiresias,” (559-560). In this scene, Odysseus decided to pay respect to the blind prophet, Tiresias, by sacrificing his best lamb, instead of keeping it for him and his crew.…

His distinct and recurring thought is absolute hate for the leader of the Party, Big Brother, and by extension the concept of eliminating personal freedoms through totalitarianism. This is evidenced countless times during the novel, such as through his diary entries, “His pen had slid voluptuously over the smooth paper, printing in large neat capitals—DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER over and over again, filling half a page (Orwell 23).” This opinion is in stark contrast to that of the common people, or proles, who are content to submit to Big Brother, “To keep them in control was not difficult (Orwell 91).” While there is no doubt that Winston hates the Party and Big Brother, there is ambiguity in regard to the specific reason for this hate. The answer may lie in Novels for Students: 1984, which indicates the reason for the Party’s oppressive laws is that some people try to exercise free will (“1984”).…
