Bad Manager Definition

Sooner or later in the workforce almost everyone will encounter a bad manager. In my two years working at Jewel-Osco I began to see how bad managers cause there to be a negative atmosphere at work. And as a result of this, employees don’t work as hard. A bad manager can be characterized in many different ways. Having a bad manager causes many negative effects on all of the employees who work under them and even impacts the overall well-being of the company.
There is no single definition of what makes a manager a bad manager. There are certain qualities that are lacking from a bad manager and they often times have the wrong mindset. Bad managers often think that just because they are good as doing a certain job, that they are automatically

They will act as if it is an employee’s fault rather than their own. From my own experiences in the workplace, I have had one manager who never took responsibilities for her mistakes or for tasks she forgot to complete. As soon as her manager asked why she didn’t do something she automatically says it wasn’t her job to do, that she gave the specific task to someone else to complete. When this happens, we all become more frustrated with our manager, and as a result do less work because we are all too focused on being blamed for something that wasn’t our fault. “The best employees in the organization recognize when mistakes have been made, and they also recognize when a manager is covering his own tracks. They ultimately lose respect, trust, and confidence in the manager, and more often than not, they will jump ship at the first opportunity that comes along to work in a better environment” (Anderson). At my work, four out of five of us are strongly considering working elsewhere because of our manager, just like the article stated. In addition, having to work with a bad manager day in and day out can cause employees health to deteriorate. “Chronic stress that can result when someone must deal daily with a bad boss has been linked to high blood pressure, sleep problems and anxiety…” (Shannonhouse). Not only are these health problems going to effect the over productivity of the employee, but it will also affect their everyday lives.
