We can define professional as someone who “exhibits a courteous, conscientious and generally businesslike manner in the workplace” (Saskatchewan Polytechnic, 2015, p. 1). We as Disability Support Workers are known as professionals in our field. (Saskatchewan Polytechnic, 2015, p.1). In class, Darrell describes that a piece of paper or certificate is not enough to describe us as professionals, it is a shopping bag of resources and research that will help us to become “professionals”. Every person has different set of values and attitudes. Values can be defined as a business-related beliefs or principles that guide professional behavior and they may reflect ethics, practices, standards and other norms within a commercial environment (Professional Values, 2016). It is very important, as a Disability Support Worker to examine one’s values and attitudes and how they might factor in to the relationship with the individual that they are supporting (Saskatchewan Polytechnic, 2015).
We can categorize values into different sections. For example, we can relate values to happiness, family, wealth, and career success as professionals. The behavior of a professional might be affected by his/her values in different ways. For instance, it can affect the behavior of professionals if they have different cultural backgrounds, educational backgrounds, and religious beliefs. Our values and attitudes are extremely important factors given the type of work that is required in the human service field (Saskatchewan Polytechnic, 2015, p. 19). Professionals can develop set of values over their lifetime. As I am from India, I practice a certain religion and have different social beliefs. These things are having a great impact on my values and various life aspects. For instance, before attending the DSW course, I was not aware about the various life aspects of people with disabilities. In India, the lives of the people with disabilities are very difficult. Most part of the community thinks that people with disabilities are not a part of the community and that they are disconnected from the community.
Most of the people in India have common misconceptions about people with disabilities that they must be special kind of persons. I had the same thoughts and beliefs, when I was there. But, as I moved to Canada and after attending DSW course and thoroughly studying, I became more aware of my traits and values about community and people with disabilities. I learned that people with various disabilities have the same rights as me. We have to treat them with respect and dignity as they have the same dreams and goals in life.
