First things first, as human beings, we have always had free will. Free will is not a recent development in society, it has been around since the beginning of time. In the first book of the Bible, God told Adam and Eve that they were free to eat from any tree in the garden, but if they ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil that they would die (Gen. 2:16-17). We each can chose to go down whatever path we want. A Bible verse that verifies the fact that we all have free will, not a fate, is Proverbs 16:9, “The human heart plans the way, but the Lord directs the steps.” This professes how God does not control people, but He supports them in their lives through the gift of His grace. Also, in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, there is a passage that states that it is man's own decision to either accept God and strive to join him in heaven or reject Him (1743). Which shows that everyone can either choose God and possibly end up in heaven or renounce God and run the risk of spending an eternity without His love.
