Effective teachers implement classroom management procedures and routines that promote a positive learning environment and reduce behavior issues. “Classroom management refers to the wide variety of skills and techniques that teachers use to keep students organized, orderly, focused, attentive, on task, and academically productive during a class” ("Classroom Management ," 2013). When a classroom is not managed correctly, it leads to disruption and chaos. When a classroom is managed correctly, then positive relationships can form and students are able to learn at their highest potential. Classroom management previously took the form of discipline, and did not necessarily incorporate how to manage the classroom. The discipline methods included, corporal punishment and rote discipline. Classroom management deals with how things are done, what rules and procedures are in place to manage the class effectively. Classroom discipline deals with how students behave, and what their punishment will be when their behavior does not match what the teacher wants. In the 1700’s the teachers were given permission to act as their students parents would act when it came to disciplining them. Meaning, they were allowed to punish them as they saw fit, which usually meant some form of corporal punishment. In the 1800’s more women were beginning to teach and the focus was not on creating relationships between teacher and student, but was on rewards and punishments. There are various forms of punishment that the article discusses. Some examples include, choking, withholding bathroom privileges, confining the student to an uncomfortable space and excessive exercise. Between 1986 and 1987 there were at least 1 million reported cases of corporal punishment in the United States (Poole et al.). Boys and minorities were disciplined more than girls and white students. Poole states that there are three common reasons why corporal punishment would be allowed. The first being religious preferences, then disciplinary philosophies and lastly the teachers need to maintain control of the classroom. While there were defenders for corporal punishment, there were also reasons why it was outlawed in most states. Corporal punishment can lead to humiliation of the student and creates a hostile environment at school. A child who is the victim of corporal punishment can also be lead to believing that violence is an acceptable way of controlling how others behave. This can eventually lead to domestic
