CHARACTERIZATION: Herbert and Pip discuss how Molly came to be Mr. Jaggers’ servant, and her demeanor is explained by Herbert. He says that she was jealous, revengeful, and young. This explains how she ended up murdering her husband. In these terms, it represents the literary term, characterization. Giving Molly a personality lets readers know why she is the way she is today and how she came about her job.

QUESTION: Pip receives a letter regarding information on his uncle Provis. My question is: who sent this letter, and who had the nerve to do so(especially blackmailing a very rich man)? Judging by the wording of the letter, this person knows Pip. Also, the wording reveals that this person is not very educated. My guess is Joe.

By the looks of it, this place where all of the judging happens has no mercy on these criminals. It seems to reflect upon the times that this book took place because it was plenty different from modern day society in which there’s much more organization in the court system.

CONNOTATION: While Magwitch is resting on his deathbed, he tells Pip, “ you’ve been more comfortable alonger me since I was under a dark cloud, than when the sun shone” (Dickens 820). This implies that the meaning behind this was they were closer during the times that were hard rather than the happier days, making it a connotation. It shows how much their relationship grew because in the start, Pip wanted to get rid of him as soon as possible, now it is the opposite.

ALLUSION: Magwitch falls under extreme illness and Pip sits at his bedside to comfort him. During this time, he proclaims these words: “O Lord, be merciful to him, a sinner” (Dickens 821)! This is an allusion, referencing the bible. This represents how religious people were in the Victorian Era in England; their whole life and all of their beliefs revolved around
