In the book The Alchemist, Santiago had many great trait but for every good trait he had a bad one. The first good trait that is given is that he wants to be different. This is portrayed when he says “But ever since he had been a child, he had wanted to know the world, and this was much more important to him than knowing God and learning about man's sins.” Santiago did not want to do what his family expected of him. He did the unexpected and followed his own path, not one that was made for him. Even when his father stated, "People from all over the world have passed through this village son. They come in search of new things, but when they leave they are basically the same people they were when they arrived.” it did not discourage or make Santiago think less of his dream.
Another good trait in Santiago is his desire in adventure and seeing new things. In this quote, “Whenever he could, he sought out a new road to travel. Santiago is mugged and stolen from many times throughout the story. In the quote, “The scale of his sheep had left him with enough money in his pouch, and the boy knew that in money there was magic; whoever has money is never really alone.” it demonstrates how Santiago’s feelings about money contribute to his naive personality. Also in the quote, “ The boy trusted his new friend. He had helped him out of a dangerous situation. He took out his money and counted it. ‘We could get to the pyramids by tomorrow, but I will need to buy two camels.” Santiago trusts a boy that he has never met before will all his belongings. He expects that a boy he barely knew was going to be truthful and take him to where he wants to go but instead he takes everything he has and is never seen
