Throughout the Great Gatsby, Nick attempts to reserve his judgements for others, but Nick criticizes just about every single character ever talks about in the book, like Gatsby being the representation of everything that makes Nick feel “unaffected scorn” (Fitzgerald 2), Tom and Daisy being completely and utterly “careless people” (Fitzgerald 179), Myrtle’s struggle to rise above the “shiftlessness of the lower orders” (Fitzgerald 32), and Jordan being “incurably dishonest” (Fitzgerald 58). Even though Nick is critical, he does his best to stay true to everyone while also trying to respect their wishes by keeping their secrets from each other. I feel as if I am a truthful person that tries to be as straightforward as possible with people and with myself. In my opinion, being at face value with others can scare people because of the immediate response they get whether negative or positive, but this is much better than lying to someone and having it bite you later down the road when you need them the most. There’s also the times where, instead of telling the truth or lying, an option presents itself to be neutral which Nick does in the book and I do in my daily life. An example of this neutrality is when it comes to my dad and my grades, I don’t use subterfuge, I simply don’t talk about them rather than lying about it, ending up stuck between a rock and a hard place. The last thing I would want to do is encourage provocation, so my only option is to elude the subject when possible and avoid any
