Character traits in fictional or real people have positive and negative effects on the people around them. In the story Beowulf, the epic hero in this story has a positive effect on others in his surroundings. A character trait is all the aspects of a person’s behavior and attitudes that make up the persons personality. Beowulf has an abundant amount of positive character traits as he travels on his quest.
Beowulf is full of bravery on his journey. Being brave is courageous behavior. He is presented in line 387 as Higlac’s brave follower. He was to slay the monster Grendel and his mother to bring peace to Herot. The lair was the name of their home. It was a place where animals would rather die than roam free. In his last battle at the age of seventy, a dragon was to be defeated in his homeland, Geatland. “The monster came quickly toward him, pouring out fire and smoke, hurrying to its fate.” (680-681) Beowulf’s mail protected him as he planned; then it began to melt. He struck at the dragon as his sword blade broke as it bit into the monster’s blood. The beast drew back in pain with anger and rage. None of his comrades came to his rescue as they fled deep into the woods. Beowulf held down by the dragon’s fire waves that came from his breath. A king now suffering. Wiglaf, the only loyal soldier he had stood there engaging to help his king. Wiglaf finished off the battle and gave the glory to his king that lay there dying. Wiglaf fetched the gems and treasure that the dragon was protecting. He returned to his king with the treasures as he presented them to Beowulf in his last moments. Beowulf gave his royalty to Wiglaf to take over his throne. “The Geats built the tower, as Beowulf had asked, strong and tall, so sailors could find it from far and wide.” (843-845) The memorial was built for him so his memory lives on. The soldiers rode around his tower in their last moments in sorrow of their beloved king.
Beowulf’s positive character traits through this epic poem influence others to be like him.
