Character Strength Research Assignment
My top character strength is honesty, authenticity, and genuineness. Medlock (2012), states that authenticity is a “fundamental components of human fulfillment, positive self-esteem, and personal well-being.” This study was interesting in being authentic does not necessarily mean that you are the ideal version of yourself at that moment. “Authentic individuals define an ideal self that they strive to realize, and that this ideal includes an articulation of what matters in life and the values that the individual is committed to preserving and enhancing (Taylor, 1989). Being honest, authentic and genuine leads to higher life satisfaction because one is doing things that increase happiness. I feel happy when

In the study I found that “people high in trait curiosity reported more frequent growth-oriented behaviors, and greater presence of meaning, search for meaning, and life satisfaction. The curiosity trait allows a person to expand their knowledge, skills and goal-directed effort. The curiosity trait expands “their views of self, others, and the world with an inevitable stretching of information, knowledge, and skills” (Kashdan, 2007). Curiosity and interest in the world will lead to happiness in my life because I am always gathering, accessing and using the new information to make me a well-informed person. I see how other cultures and peoples live their lives and can understand different views better than before. I can contribute to society in a better, more meaningful way because I would have a large pool of knowledge and understanding to draw from. As I do have an interest in learning new things and travel, it’s a form of self-care for myself. I nurture the parts of me that crave the novel things in the world. It makes me feel great to have new experiences and that I’m participating in my life and my place in the …show more content…
As there are two paths to happiness: externalism and internalism. This article argues for using both in life. “We argue here that happiness emerges from the interaction of inner and outer conditions. External conditions provide potentials for happiness and internal processes act as filters for real world experience. These two processes mutually affect each other” (Ahuvia, 2015). Happiness is complex and requires a multitude of things: perceptions, evaluations, and happiness-enhancing mental strategies. Techniques like meditation, attention to emotions, evaluating situations/thoughts, etc. One has to actively work towards happiness using one’s self, others and even the environment at a play in happiness. Regarding the externalism, which has a lot of criticism, it seems to create more stuff for us to buy to potentially lead to happiness (i.e. economic and social conditions). Yet it seems to leave many choices available but a higher chance of unhappiness. Putting your happiness on social conditions, material objects, etc. seems to temporarily meet the need of an unhappy life. A balance must be struck using interactionism. This article resonates with me in regards to using my internal and external environments in a sort of balanced way to lead me, and keep me, in happiness. By recognizing that the external conditions to reach happiness are equally important and that happiness

It is impossible to lead a fulfilling life in a society with constant threats of attacks. Similarly, people who are sick in hospitals do not enjoy their lives irrespective of the amount of money that they have. To them, recovering from the sickness is what will enable them to achieve happiness. However, the poor are also not happy in life despite the fact that they are in good health or have close friends. Thus, I believe happiness encompasses a wide range of factors that make life…

Everyone has their own individual definition of happiness. Richard Taylor describes happiness as “a state of being, not a mere feeling” (Taylor, 116), but how may one come to this total state of fulfillment? Vivien Sung who wrote Five-Fold Happiness and Richard Taylor who wrote a chapter on happiness in his book An Introduction to Virtue Ethics both agree that happiness is made up of many different parts. Because happiness is made up of different components, achieving prosperity, longevity, and wealth are three elements that can lead to being fully…

I thought the Survey of Character Strengths was an interesting survey to take. My first and second strengths were not particularly surprising to me, however my third was not what I necessarily expected it to be, but I am certainly not unhappy with it. All three strengths are values I have always admired because I have grown up watching my parents and older siblings showcase all three. I have consciously tried to emulate their example regarding these strengths and it was intriguing and encouraging to see all three show up in the survey. I was glad to see which strength showed up as my top, as kindness and generosity are especially important to me.…
