At first the Olinka are intrigued and want to become friends with the road builders. The road soon heads through the village and the Olinka are angered by the betrayal and the damage done to their home. Nettie has conflicting views of both sides. She feels betrayed by the builders because she worked hard to educate and help the Olinka, but the builders are simply following orders and there is nothing she could do. I personally connected with Nettie because she was very torn between what is right and what has to be done. I am sure that we have all felt conflicting views at home or in our friend groups at some point in our lives. We feel the need to do what is right, but there is also the conflicting force of what you have to or should
