The Color Purple Character Analysis Essay

Within the second section of Walker’s The Color Purple, there were many extensive moments. These include when Shug and Celie found Nettie’s letters, when Shug helped Celie discover her sexuality, Nettie witnessing the road being built through her village and when Celie realised that she has two children who are alive in Africa. Firstly, when Celie was supposed to be receiving letters from Nettie since she had left, Shug and Celie decided that Mr.___ was taking the letters straight from the mailbox to his hiding spot for them. After they found the letters, along came the strength for Celie to become angry at her husband, which was important to Celie’s character metamorphosis since she was always the type of woman to take things as they came to her and for her to not take Mr.___’s letter hiding lightly was a big step in her character development. She had evolved as a character to show more emotion and independence, and to finally fight back against her abusive husband was a new strength that she had gained from spending time with Shug. At first the Olinka are intrigued and want to become friends with the road builders. The road soon heads through the village and the Olinka are angered by the betrayal and the damage done to their home. Nettie has conflicting views of both sides. She feels betrayed by the builders because she worked hard to educate and help the Olinka, but the builders are simply following orders and there is nothing she could do. I personally connected with Nettie because she was very torn between what is right and what has to be done. I am sure that we have all felt conflicting views at home or in our friend groups at some point in our lives.
