The attitudes of others towards Piggy symbolize anti-intellectualism in not just uncivilized but civilized society as well. Jack’s disdain for Piggy emphasizes the former; Ralph’s ignorance of Piggy at the beginning the latter—the wild hungry savage and the strong handsome leader respectively abusing and ignoring the more intelligent but weaker. Ralph initially looks down on Piggy. During their first meeting, after Ralph tells Piggy his name, Piggy “waited to be asked his name in turn but this proffer of acquaintance was not made” (Golding 9). By not even bothering to learn Piggy’s name, Ralph is essentially distances himself from Piggy.…

In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Piggy is the most mature of the boys, due to his intelligence and ideas and kindness to the others. Throughout the book Piggy’s ideas are shot down by the other boys almost immediately, even though it is obvious that he has the most intellectual ideas and thoughts out of all of them (Golding).Piggy’s intelligence shows his maturity, as it sets him apart from the others. His intelligence also helps him from resorting to savagery like the other boys, which shows that he is more mature and balanced, as not to resort to a primal nature. Piggy is also kind to most of the other boys, especially the littluns (Golding). He takes an almost parental role towards the younger boys due to always being left behind…

The second and most obvious evidence in the book that he is a nerd, is his asthma, all characteristic nerds in books and other media has asthma.…

From the start, Ralph and his close advisors and friends work towards getting rescued and developing methods to better ensure their survival on the island. One analysis of Lord of the Flies summarized the boys as symbols of good, “During their abandonment on the island, Ralph, Piggy, Simon, and many of the other boys show elements of good in their characters. Ralph 's calm "stillness," and his attentiveness to others ' needs, make him a potentially good person. Good may be defined here as something just, virtuous, or kind that conforms to the moral order of the universe. Piggy 's knowledge and belief in the power of science and rational thought to help people understand and thus control the physical world for their mutual benefit are also obviously a force for good.…
