Is True Friendship Real? Some people say friendship encompasses trust and feelings. Others say it is someone just to be around for entertainment. Can friendship be considered a human need? Of Mice and Men challenges the idea of friendship, and how it affects a person’s emotions, decisions, and their life. In the event of their friendship the question begins to servos, if their friendship was even real? To Lennie the friendship contained trust and feeling, but to George it seemed more as a job he had to take the responsibility for. Decisions lay within every relationship, but it is how one handles them that counts the most. Friendship is something that contains entertainment and pleasure. Aristotle thought of three types of friendship, and those of usefulness is the second. In the article it states, “… while the second is often the province of the old, who need assistance to cope with their frailty” (May 2). In other words, this explains how in some friendships one person is being used to the others advantage. In the novella Of Mice and Men it shows signs of George taking advantage of Lennie and his friendship, and using Lennie. In the novella it says, “‘No, he ain’t, but he’s sure a hell of a good worker. Strong as a bull’” (Steinbeck 22). George is beginning to speak for Lennie, and excessively talks about how Lennie is such a good worker. George wasn’t to keep Lennie from any chaos and pain as much as possible. He wants to keep his death light and peaceful, as he feels Lennie deserves. George came to realize in this moment, before killing Lennie, that their friendship meant so much to Lennie. Now that he has time to think about it, their friendship meant more to George then he had ever thought. Friendship can be pushed aside and explained in such a loose way, but it is much more complexed. It is hard for someone to become part of a relationship where there is such a deep bond. True friendship holds tough decisions, trust, and emotions that cannot be lightly cared for. Handling these components in a friendship shows the dedication of a true friend. Of Mice and Men shows some of the events that occur in friendship to the stories shared, the arguments that occurred, and the tough choices that have to be made.
