The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby is a book that every junior read in eleventh grade English. I always hated reading books that I was assigned to in English because I am not much of a reader, but for some reason I enjoyed The Great Gatsby. It was just a good book that had good references to life. The best part about reading an assigned book in English is being able to watch the movie when you finish it. My class watched the newer version of it because it was easier to find than the old one. The one thing I really noticed in the movie was that it didn’t bring as many references as the book did. In the beginning of the movie, he is getting help from a doctor at a school for alcoholism and depression and he tells the story from the school. On the other hand, in the book Nick is telling the story after he goes to the appointment and is telling it in the future in a different setting than the school. Daisy Buchanan is Tom Buchanan’s wife and she appears to be very sweet and innocent in the book, but you can tell that she is selfish with what she does. However, in the movie she doesn’t sound the same as you would think. She speaks sweetly instead of speaking selfish. The director wanted us to feel more sympathetic towards her character so it would give us more of a reason to see why Gatsby loved her so much. Like the Great Gatsby, there is an older movie and a remake of the movie. I, however watched the newer version because they portrayed more differences between the book and the movie in the new version. Times have changed since they wrote the book and needed to change a few things. Although the book and movie had tons of differences, they did hit a lot of similarities and still made it a good, suspenseful movie to watch. Reading the book helped a lot because it gave older references which were easier to understand. The book will always be better than the movie, but isn’t that with every
