In the future of my being a leader started the day I started teaching, I thrive in connecting with my parents and having them trust me and support their child through the assignments and learning in my classroom. I speak the truth and allow my students to develop their own perspectives, and communicate those perspectives to others while leaving room for change. This work we have done in character education will lead me in engaging my colleagues in the work our district is doing in racial equity, an abundance of what we want to accomplish in deep equity really speaks to and is connected to people’s moral and civic characters, although I am personally attracted to the performance character values, all are important to do this work. I agree with Carol Allred when she says, “We’re going to face some difficulty, because some people are going to see this report and think character education doesn’t work, and that would be the wrong conclusion to come to, based on one report. I think it gives a false sense of failure based on limited analysis.” (Sparks, 2010). I will have to sell so to speak, that it is people’s character we are appealing to when we do the work toward racial equity and it is our shared sensibilities that need to be our pathway to a shared world.
