When she gets her hair relaxed, it burned her skull so drastically that her hair started to fall out. When she finally decided to go to work her co-workers thought that her changing her hair meant something political or that she was a lesbian.
Obinze went to England with his mother on a working visa and in order for him to stay there he had to get married to an England citizen in order for him to get a green card. He arranged for an arranged marriage with two Angolan men. He was planning on marrying a girl by the name of Cleotilde and divorce her just after the marriage was final. “You can still get married even though your visa is expired. In fact, getting married is now your only choice”.
All of these characters changed themselves in one way or the other, in order to succeed in their new country. By doing this they started to lose a bit of their own identity and so when they went back home, they didn’t fit in there

The award winning American novelist, Nicholas Sparks, once wrote “He often felt that too many people lived their lives acting and pretending wearing masks and losing themselves in the process.” Indeed, a mask is worn to obfuscate an individual’s true identity and to conceal their abiding fear of failure. In Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel, Americanah, the creation of this facade is exhibited through the characters’ deep-seated desire for social acceptance. The story begins by showing all of the triumphs that the two main protagonists, Ifemelu and Obinze, have had throughout their lifetimes. Yet, despite these tremendous accomplishments, their identities have become tainted by their longing for society’s unattainable image of success.…

As a child, the world to me was a place with elusive networks of dirt roads. The small, dirty, square shaped, concrete houses provided shade and comfort from the heat that bounced off the streets causing a mirage of wavering images. Hearing similar dialogues and accents as the people argued for cheaper pomegranates from the food stands located at the corner of the streets. This place of dirt networks, flat-roofed houses, and loud, crowded streets was where I grew up.…
