Changes In A Character
Short stories consist of dynamic and static characters. In the short story “A&P” by John Updike, a man with the name of Sammy experiences a conflict that comes between him and his occupation. Sammy changes his mood, as well as other characters, in this story.
In The Beginning
Sammy has a pretty steady life when the story starts out. The nineteen-year-old works in a grocery stores’ third checkout slot. A&P is the average, day-to-day supermarket. Although, the story does not just come out and say that he has an occupation here. Readers may realize this when Sammy says, “I ring it up again and the customer starts giving me hell,” (par.1) and “I got her feathers smoothed and her goodies into a bag.” (par.2). Before the problem happens, he sees three girls walk into the store.

He notices every detail about them. In the story, he says “The one that caught my eye first was the one in the plaid green two-piece.” (par.1). “Queenie” is the nickname Sammy gives to the leader of the girls. Strokesie, a co-worker, joins in and adds commentary as they both watch the girls. Coincidently, the girls choose Sammy’s line to check-out. Unfortunately, the girls had on their bathing suits only. The “No shirt, no shoes, no service,” policy strictly prohibited their attire. Luckily, the manager, Lengel, suddenly approaches the girls to let them know of their wrongdoing. Heroism filled Sammy's heart and suddenly he says “I quit” (par.22). Little did he know that the short-sighted statement was not actually going to help the ladies gain justice or make them fall in love with
