Character And Internal Conflict In Fences By August Wilson

“Fences” by August Wilson, one of the main characters is Rose which struggles greatly in the story from her husband having an affair to the pain she endures for her no good husband. Rose is married to Troy who seems like a decent person but going in further into the story, his true colors come out. Troy is a compulsive liar and cheats on his wife, while Rose has a feeling something is going on she ignores it because that’s her husband. She is a strong person who face whatever obstacle is thrown her away and she decides to stay with Troy and not leave him not because she loves him that much because she has a son with him who needs her more than they need Troy. Her conflict was to take care of the baby and lose her husband because Rose knew if she agreed to take are of the baby she would leave Troy since the baby was his and Alberta’s but she her internal conflict was to decide if it was worth taking care of the baby she decided to take in the child like her own because that’s her character. Another conflict Rose Maxson faced was her realizing Troy is not perfect all, he messes up every time he gets the chance which gets Rose upset and she wants to leave him because all he does is mess up. He doesn’t let us son play football because he doesn’t want him to since he believes that he won’t make it as professional football player because of his color, he insults Rose in front of company which embarrasses Rose because she has to put him in his place every time he makes an inappropriate remark about her or about women in general. So another conflict of hers it to see past all of his flaws or to leave him so she can find someone way better than Troy who doesn’t make remarks like that and treats her like she’s worthless. But Rose decides to see past his flaws because she is an obedient housewife who listens to her husband since it was taken place a long time ago those were the roles of housewives, to listen to their husbands and to stay with them through the bad and the good, those are the two main conflicts that Rose Maxson faces throughout the play of
