The setting takes place during the end of November when the season is shifting from fall to winter. This symbolizes the changes in the relationship between the boy and the girl. Their cold relationship changes because their baby girl is born, and they are still young so this is a life-changing time for them. The boy does not know if he is or wants to be fully committed to his wife and baby at this young age. Next, the boy scrapes of the ice of the car which represents clearing his mind. The ice being scraped off the window allows him to see where he drives, and the reader can assume that it also makes him realize that he should stay home with his wife and baby. “He went around to the car windows and, making a job of it, scraped away the ice. He turned off the motor and sat awhile. And then he got out and went back inside.” It impacts the meaning because the boy finally starts to accept the new role of being a father and a husband. Finally, when the boy spills the syrup, waffles, bacon, and butter, it connects to the title,“Everything Stuck to Him.” However, it invites speculation that it symbolizes the story that the boy tells to his daughter in the outer story.
