miss.Caroline didn’t like how scout read, mostly because she exceeded the standards. Scout disagreed with most of the things she taught. “Now you tell your father not to teach you any more. It’s best to begin reading with a fresh mind. You tell him I’ll take over from here and try to undo the damage.”Scout was very mad about miss caroline. Keep in mind miss caroline was new and from northern alabama so she didn’t know the rules around maycomb. Miss caroline goes strictly by the rules. When Scout warns Miss Caroline about Walter Cunningham because he can’t pay her back, Miss Caroline refuses to listen scout and instead punishes her by whacking her in the hand with a ruler. All the kids start laughing but they aren’t laughing at scout they are laughing at Miss Caroline because it was so silly what she was doing. Nobody would ever do that in maycomb let alone to one of the smartest kids. After that scene Miss Caroline is frustrated at her because she doesn’t know how anything works around Maycomb. Caroline that Atticus “hasn’t taught” her anything, she still is full of distaste and Scout knows this because of the way she “smiled and shook her head”. Scout tried to overcome Miss. Caroline’s prejudice of her being literate by explaining to her the situation, but her prejudice remained because everyone from the time was very use to using prejudice, so it was hard for people like Scout of overcome one’s prejudice. This is just one example of how the characters in the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, try to overcome a person's prejudice, but can’t because of the way their society works, which proves that prejudice is hard to defeat. To continue, Mrs. Dubose was not nice to Jem and Scout in anyway, she was fast to judge them and Atticus without any reason.…

Aunt Alexandra forces Scout to wear a dress instead of her overalls because she is too boyish. It is wrong to force a dress code in society to look lady-like as a person’s clothing can be part of their identity, Lastly, the thought that there is a certain way a girl should act is wrongful. For example, Jem tells Scout that “It’s time you started bein’ a girl and acting right!”(Lee 153) because he gains a new set of values after reading to Mrs. Dubose on the day of her death. These values affect Scout harmfully as it imposes that she is not a girl because of the way she acts. Though through these comments the audience can learn about how immoral it is to tell someone to live their life a certain way.…

This is because when Maleeka sees Miss Saunders for the first time, she thinks that she won’t be any good of a teacher but as she got to know her, she realized how she changed her life completely by teaching her a lesson about prejudice. Another evidence I had of this theme is that John-John made a teasing song about Maleeka and her “ugly” looks. He sang it to bully her. People also don’t talk to a lot to Maleeka and become ignorant around her. They also find her really annoying because of how she was a nerd.…

She has a closed off mind right now, so she does not understand the situation from Calpurnia’s perspective, making her socially immature. However, when Calpurnia takes her to the black church Scout starts thinking differently about her nanny.…

This quote, furthermore shows that when Scout was younger, Scout didn’t understand what the ladies of Maycomb said. Now Scout is older, Scout understands what the ladies are saying and is shocked by such cruelty. This and the trial of Tom will eventually start to break down the innocence of Scout. Another quote showing innocence broken when coming of age is when Atticus is being surrounded by a mob and asks Jem to take Scout and leave, but Jem refuses. Teachers did not treat students with respect. Miss Caroline did not like how the class was acting and threatened the children by insisting, “If I hear another sound from this room I’ll burn up everybody in it” (Lee 29). Learning in an environment where surrounding people are cruel is not a good place for anyone to do anything. Being in the world where one is comfortable can only be to one’s benefit because learning opportunities will be brought up more where someone feels that they can express anything they would like; school lessons that were taught afterwards were not as important as what life lessons had to offer. Although Scout and Jem learn a sense of tolerance during the hours of school, learning from the world gives varieties of situations that would not occur in school that would give greater value.…
