The Quote, “And my fury at him, is nothing compared to my fury at myself,” is Brewster’s way of saying he wishes he could do more. Because he can not fight or injury Uncle Hoyt, he is not defending Cody. He wishes that he could fight off Uncle Hoyt and make him stop, but he can’t. Due to this, he is furious at himself for not doing enough to stop it. He may be keeping Cody form feeling pain, but he can not stop him from experiencing it.

The second quote, “The wounds are my dignity; I will not share them,” is Brew saying that they are his proof that he beat Uncle Hoyt. Since he had the marks, he can use it in two ways-he can hold it over Uncle Hoyt’s head, making him worry that Brew will tell people. They also prove that he and Cody can survive
