Character Essay In “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber, Walter Mitty is a discontent character. Mitty first shows his discontentment in the beginning of the story when he imagines himself as a commander. He conjures up an image of himself as a brave leader, and is then pulled back into reality when his wife reprimands him for driving too fast. This shows the contrast between how he perceives himself in his fictional world, in comparison to his actual character. In his romanticized life, he takes charge of things, when in reality he is under the control of his wife.
