Character Analysis: The Pardoner

Decent Essays
On the other hand, we have the Pardoner, who is the complete opposite physical appearance of the Summoner. He is a “gentle” man from Rouncivalle. He is good at singing and has long waxy yellow hair, which he does not wear a hood or cap to cover when he rides. He also has no beard and carries false relics to cheat naive people. These include a pillow case which had served as Our Lady’s veil, the piece of sail with which St. Peter went to sea until Christ caught him, and a glass jar filled with pig’s bones. He has duped many innocent parsons by selling them false indulgences and relics, making him earn lots and lots of money in just one

There are hundreds of conmen in the world, but I bet that none of them are similar to the Summoner and Pardoner. The Summoner, first of all, does not only have a small, bright-red face covered with pimples, puffy eyes, thick black eyebrows, and a thin, raggy old beard, who really likes garlic, onions, and leeks, but he is also a church official who is responsible for assembling the sinners before the ecclesiastical courts.
