A trait that Ponyboy seems to be trying his hardest to retain is the basic feeling of empathy. Ponyboy is harassed by the Socs and is underprivileged compared to them, nevertheless, he doesn’t hate them. A Soc that he has befriended, Sherri Valance, acted as a window to the life of a Soc for Ponyboy. Ponyboy shows an understanding of the fact that both sides have their own problems and accordingly both sides’ problems are just as real as the others. Ponyboy expresses this well in the essay I mentioned previously.…

In the books The Outsiders and The Lord of the Flies, Hinton’s and Golding’s approaches to the themes of challenges, choices, conformity all contrast. For example, in The Outsiders, Hinton’s approach to challenges contrast Golding’s plot and the way they affect the story. One of the challenges Ponyboy faces is the fact that his parents are dead and his oldest brother, Darry, is supporting the family. On page 3, Ponyboy says, “Since Mom and Dad were killed in an auto wreck, the three of us get to stay together only as long as we behave.” (Hinton 3).…

For my film analysis, I chose to analyze the movie “The Outsiders” directed by Francis Ford Coppola and based on the novel “The Outsiders” by S. E. Hinton. In this movie, a gang of outcasts from the north side of town called the Greasers are always fighting against a rival group called the Socials, who are the rich jocks from the south side of town. The story follows two young Greasers, Johnny and Ponyboy, who aren’t like the others. These two see that fighting is pointless, but it’s just the way they live their life. The two boys get into a fight with some Socials and end up killing one.…

The socs are always jumping the greasers and beating them up but they never get caught because they have rich parents and are high up in society. Throughout the book it gives details on the struggles that the kids with no money have to go through every day. It also gives insight into the true motives and feelings of people and how not everything is perfect, even for the people who seem to have it that way This book is told from the view point of a fourteen year old greaser named Ponyboy Curtis.…

On page 2 it says “We get jumped by the Socs. I’m not sure that's how you spell it, but it’s the abbreviation for the Socials, the jet set, the West- side rich kids. It’s like the term “greaser,” which is used to class all us boys on the East Side.” This quote is said by Ponyboy, while he’s walking home from the movie theater. He’s alone, and it is common for the Greasers to be jumped by the Socs.…

His personality stands out as the gentle one of the gang, but he “was a good fighter and could play it cool, but he was sensitive and that isn't a good way to be when you're a greaser” (88). Ponyboy knows that Johnny could fight if he needed but Johnny says “fighting’s no good. . . .” (148). He believes that fighting does not answer the problems the greasers and the Socs have. Before Johnny died he wrote a note in Gone With the Wind and left the book for Ponyboy.…

Both Dorian Gray and the Narrator of Fight Club when introduced do not have very strong personalities even though they are considered main characters. Dorian Gray is a young, high class individual who follows England laws and is seen as a very innocent and morally good individual until he realizes he is beautiful. The Narrator of Fight Club is a middle class, law abiding citizen who realizes his life is very dull and desires for a different life altogether. Both characters make a form of wish that is fulfilled with the help of an individual with a much stronger personality than themselves. In both sources, this stronger character becomes extremely influential to the main characters by causing them to alter their personalities and life decisions.…

The stories "An Adventure in Paris"(NASF. 493) by Guy De Maupassant and "Everyday Use"(NASF. 816) by Alice Walker showcase similar and different ways to present a story through point of view and characters. Both stories have characters that are functional and symbolic to the story. Each of these stories uses both a foil and utilitarian through one character, Dee and Jean Varin, that ultimately changes the protagonist for the better and allows them to see what they have. De Maupassant makes his story a mix of third-person story telling and first-person experience to expose the extremity of a woman's curiosity. Meanwhile, Walker only uses the first person narration, which gives us perspective into the protagonist’s mind.…
