Character Analysis: The Magnolia Story

Over the course of this semester, I read a book called The Magnolia Story, by Chip and Joanna Gaines. Chip and Joanna Gaines, as you may recognize their names from their hit HGTV show Fixer Upper, have become experts in the business industry. This is because they have spent most of their lives flipping, selling & remodeling houses, learning how to deal with income, saving and spending their profit, and running multiple businesses at once! They started their business, Magnolia homes, and have been remodeling homes for the past 15 years together. All while, Joanna had established her shop called the Magnolia Market where she sold retail home decor. Chip has been flipping houses ever since he was a college student at Baylor University and Joanna …show more content…
The pilot for fixer upper aired in May of 2013 and the first episode aired in April 2014. Chip and Joanna inspired millions with their authenticity and role model like attributes. Just after the show aired, Joanna decided to reopen her shop on Bosque Boulevard, but this time she opened it up in the silos. Chip and Joanna still live on their farm to this day and although they have stopped filming Fixer Upper, they still enjoy flipping houses and of course, they spend plenty of time with family and …show more content…
They continued to fight to save their business when they were almost out of money or buy a certain property when the buyer originally said no. Even when things were terrible, they never lost hope. For example, when Joanna wanted to open up the Magnolia Market, the building on Bosque Boulevard stood out to her but the owner turned down her offer. Chip and Joanna continued to negotiate and soon enough the building was theirs. When baby Drake came along, that didn’t stop Joanna from continuing to work in her shop or when business and profit was low, she continued to fight. Another main point that stood out to me is that Chip and Joanna constantly believed that God would provide for them. An example of this came when they were building a lot of houses on some land they owned. They desperately needed the money. The financial crisis had hit Waco and there was no more money that the banks could provide. A wonderful couple came along and said that God had told them to invest in Chip and Joanna’s business. It was a beautiful offer and show of trust, and how God could nudge and provide. The final key point that stood out to me is that Chip and Joanna never let their business get in the way of family. Every time they built a new house, they would make sure and do it in a short amount of time so the kids wouldn’t be affected. Joanna shut down her

Meet Caroline and Isabel Bercaw. You may think these 14 and 15 year old girls are just your average 9th grade students you sit next to in math class, but behind the busy lives they lead as students and athletes, they are very successful business owners of “Da Bomb Bath Fizzers,” a business the sisters created when they where just 10 and 11 years old. Ever since a young age, it seems Caroline’s sister, Isabel, and her have been destined to become entrepreneurs. “Me and Isabel used to make little ‘mini businesses’ that never went anywhere” Caroline told us, “like selling paintings we made to our grandma, and having cookie and lemonade stands”. Because her mother was a single woman who worked at minimum wage, she couldn’t support a family. Obviously, this took a great toll on her family. Because their funds were so scarce, they had to go to the grocery store every night because they weren’t able to purchase food for the entire week. Night after night, Brenda would find her mother sitting outside on a rickety, old wooden bench, bawling, screaming at her that they weren’t going to make it, that they were just scraping by. Comforting her mom was a futile attempt, as Brenda had attempted to do it many times before and failed every time.…

Steel Magnolias is about a group of friends. Just like any group of friends, the women talk about the people they know, their wonderful memories, exciting upcoming events, and the hardships they are experiencing. Although everyone in this play is a friend of one another, each character is very different. The audience is able to see the differences, by the way, the characters think, act, and dress. An artistic element that stood out to me was the costuming.…

Stanislavsky, the founding father of modern acting, stated that acting should be based on real life. It should do more than just simply speak, feel, or gesture an action or word, but instead do truthfully by bringing a character in a film or play to life. He believed that in order to do so, a character must have objectives, obstacles, and motivations to perform actions to achieve what he or she wants (Olivieri, lesson 1, 1:42-9:33). In the film, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, directed by Elia Kazan; the main actress, Peggy Ann Garner, displays outstanding acting that fits Stanislavsky’s definition by demonstrating her character’s objectives, obstacles, and motivations to perform her character’s actions. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, narrates a story…

I could tell something was off when I heard a strange sounding bird squawk from outside my window. My heavy eyelids fluttered open, and the plain, familiar sight of my bedroom ceiling greeted me. At first glance, everything looked normal, but as I groggily turned my head to peer out of the window to my right, I noticed something shockingly peculiar. There was no window anymore. Instead, there stood a gaping hole in the wall, with dense, overgrown jungle shrubbery creeping its way into the room.…
