Everything takes place in the barbershop, when Captain Torres the antagonist walks in for a shave. Revealing his plans to the barber which is to kill the rebels on the barber’s side. The barber happens to know the captain from past executions he committed on the rebels. The Baber is left shivering and drowned in his thoughts weighing the cost of letting the captain leave and finish his plans with the leaders, he caught on the barber’s side or take a shot to slit his throat in the barber shop. Barber chooses to have “The Lather” on his hand rather than captains blood. At the end captain revealed he knew the barber was a rebel and wanted to see if he would dare to kill him or not. This unwraps the character 's personality through his solemn, cautious, and curious personality. The author develops the barber through his solemnness at work; bad go the barber is sensitive with perfection. Author uses the quote “ I would have to shave his beard just like any other, carefully, neatly, just though he were a good costumer, taking head that not a single pore should emit a single drop of blood.”(Tellez, 2). Author discusses how the barber is solemn at his work, as he illustrates to himself to treat the captain as any other costumer. The author also reveals how serious the barber is by clarifying not a single blood should emit. Tellez expands the barber’s characteristics by his prudent and coward personality. Using the phrase “But I don’t want to be a murdered. No, sir. You came to be shaved” (4). The barber consequently reflects how prudent and coward he is. In brief letting numerous people of his own die in favor of his comfort. The barber does take any risks that might impact him. Even though the can sacrifice his comfort, or even his life to save many. The barber didn’t bother undertaking other solutions to save his people. A Solution such as to keep the captain as the hostage and make a trade deal between his people and captains people. The author has reveals his choice of the tittle throughout the story by using the protagonist’s personalities. In the story the barber says “I don’t want to be a murderer” (4). Which in ways reveal the message of the title. Because the barber reveals that he wants to be a barber and nothing else. In many occasions the barber thinks about committing the captain’s murder but backs off after convincing himself that he doesn’t want to be a murderer no matter what people will think about him once they find out the choice the barber made. The author uses quotes such as “you came in to be shaved” (4). “You’re an executioner, I’m only a barber (4). The author reveals how choices can change one’s life. To mention author gives details on the consequences the barber has to face after killing the captain in the quote “ I could have to flee, leave all this behind, take shelter far away”(4). The author also reveals the positive side of killing the captain by using the quote “The avenger of our people. A name to remember” referring to the barber as he might become a hero of a nation. Author’s interpretation to the tittle really had the theme explained behind it, as he made us go through the short story “Lather and Nothing
