Character Analysis: The Joy Luck Club

(Prompt 3) People run around like well-oiled machines. Their brains compute the actions they take, and their bodies follow the courses they chart. What happens, though, when there’s a glitch in the system? How can we stand firm against what’s inside our own minds and hearts? My mother taught me how to be strong, just as An-Mei Hsu’s mother does in The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. For me, it was a bump in the process that caused my thoughts to loop around aimlessly, repeating one part over and over again like a broken record. These little repetitions are commonly called compulsions or obsessions. They dominated my childhood, until some unwanted prodding from my mother helped me break free. The breaking point came in second grade. I vividly …show more content…

When her mother returned for An-Mei’s grandma’s final days, she was met with open hostility and was flung from the house as soon as the funeral was over. The mom wanted nothing more than to be with her children, but An-Mei’s uncle warned her that she must not leave, or else she’ll live in dishonor forever. She bravely decided to follow her mother, and it was probably the most difficult thing she’d ever done. She had to leave her little brother behind in anguish. As she flew from her uncle’s house, she remembered a story her mother had told her the night before about crying over a pond. In her mother’s story, the turtle ate up her tears, and the birds laughed at her. She said, “...it is useless to cry. Your tears do not wash away your sorrows. They feed someone else’s joy. And that is why you must learn to swallow your tears.” (217) An-Mei was inspired to keep hope, and remained calm during the difficult

The Hero’s Journey is a widely-used formula to understand protagonists and is the perpetual basis for most story arcs involving good vs. evil. The portrayal of the main character, as introduced, is that of an average joe. Someone that would otherwise be indiscernible in a crowd of extras. For example John Connor, Bilbo Baggins and Neo from the Matrix. The “commoner to hero” narrative is generally the basis for most hero beginnings given it creates a sense of relatability between the audience and character.…

In the short story "Scar" by Amy Tan, the title is thoroughly complemented to the story. The author creates an organized plot that exhibits the numerous uses of literary devices such as symbolism, figurative language, and progression in order to make it obvious to the reader that the title brings out the entire premise of the story. Amy Tan uses a great deal of symbolism in her novella which stands out in her work and makes her writing more compellingand appealing to the reader. Her symbolism points out precisely how important the scar really is in relation to the title and the story. For example, it is stated that "With her pretty, pale face, my mother appeared to float in the room, like a ghost" (Tan 16-17).…

Kathryn Stockett’s novel The Help focuses on the idea of oppression and reveals the idea of cycles within families and environments through the use of Miss Leefolt, Miss Celia, and Stuart Whitworth. By using these characters, Stockett shows how the way people are brought up as a child, molds who they go on to become as an adult. Miss Leefolt’s constant mistreatment by her mother when she was young led to the abuse of her own child when she became a parent. Though Miss Leefolt claims she loves her daughter Mae Mobley, the blatant abuse of her child makes it very hard to believe.…

There exists a stereotype about the children of immigrants: their parents press them hard to be successful, to be more than the ordinary, to avoid the struggles they themselves once faced. Those parents, perhaps, see the success of the future generation as the fruits of their own labor. People often hold the idea that immigrant parents are living vicariously through their children. In many ways, as they sometimes are, this stereotype is not far from the truth. Such behaviors are observable in the stories and memoirs of immigrants’ children; for instance, Jing-mei of Amy Tan’s “Two Kinds”.…

The stories "An Adventure in Paris"(NASF. 493) by Guy De Maupassant and "Everyday Use"(NASF. 816) by Alice Walker showcase similar and different ways to present a story through point of view and characters. Both stories have characters that are functional and symbolic to the story. Each of these stories uses both a foil and utilitarian through one character, Dee and Jean Varin, that ultimately changes the protagonist for the better and allows them to see what they have. De Maupassant makes his story a mix of third-person story telling and first-person experience to expose the extremity of a woman's curiosity. Meanwhile, Walker only uses the first person narration, which gives us perspective into the protagonist’s mind.…
