When someone shows a great deal of fervor for a goal they are called passionate. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines the word as: having, showing, or expressing strong emotions or beliefs. In the novel The Chosen by Chaim Potok several characters show a large amount of passion. Each of them show it for a different cause, and each cause may evoke varying degrees of sympathy. Three of the most obvious examples are Mr. Galanter, Rabbi Isaac Saunders, and Danny Saunders.

Mr. Galanter coaches the softball team at the yeshiva where Reuven attends school. He repeatedly points out the boys’ errors. “Goldberg, what kind of solid defensive front is that?”(6). However, the players enjoy him as a coach because of his encouragements and work ethic.

His outburst frightens everyone. Though his explosion must seem perfectly reasonable to him, most others do not view the situation with the same
