The title character and protagonist in the story, known as Gatsby, is a wealthy young man who lives in West Egg in his immense mansion. We got to know him through the parties he threw every weekend, parties that he was famous for hosting. Although, Gatsby’s identity remained unknown until Nick was first invited to a party that’s when Nick first met Jay Gatsby.
Gatsby, born as James Gatz, grew up poor on a farm in North Dakota. It was from here he ran away from home to later met a self-made millionaire named Dan Cody. They both grew to become good friends and once Dan Cody passed away, Gatsby was cheated out of money that Code had left for him. However, Gatsby was summoned to war and he was forced to leave Daisy. After the war was over, Gatsby wanted to make a man out of himself, so he decided to study at Oxford for a while. Whilst studying at Oxford, received a letter from Daisy, telling him that she had married a wealthy man of the name Tom Buchanan. This made Gatsby devote his life to becoming a man of the wealth and stature that he would believe bring Daisy back to him. Gatsby had picked up this catchphrase, “old sport”, it’s a catchphrase common among the wealthy in both England and America at the time. It’s another friendly term of endearment used between two friendly individuals. To earn Tom's wealth, Gatsby ends up working with illegal bootlegging. This shows that Gatsby really doesn’t belong in the upper class in New York. Gatsby was told that “you can’t repeat the past.”, Gatsby who replied incredulously “why of course you can!”.
