Are learning survival skills a critical part of growing up? One will come to believe that survival skills are a crucial part of growing up, especially after reading more than half the book of The Cay by Theodore Taylor, a children’s novel, in this book, we encounter a pair of survivors escaping WWII, who land on an abandoned, remote island with no people around to help them get back to civilization. Here, they need to depend on their survival skills, similar to being placed in the desert with no food, how would one survive, would they use their natural skills and logic to survive? Most of these disadvantages affects your mental psychology . One disadvantage is becoming over confident which leads to a desire to become more independent, for example, when Timothy was being very independent and not telling Philip what he has doing, this frightened Philip, who was trying to find him (Taylor,T. Chapter 11). Along with becoming over confident and extremely independent, survival skills can make you always want to feel superior. For example when Philip learned that Timothy can not spell (Taylor,T. Page 68). Furthermore, survival skills need one to use all of your 5 senses along with one's brain. This is important because you need eyes to see your obstacles, use your ears to hear predators, your hands to feel your surroundings in the dark, and your nose to smell danger but, unfortunately Philip had lost his strongest sense which is his sight . Additionally, you need to be physically fit because you have to duck and dodge branches in the wilderness. Knowledge of survival skills are an important part of personal growth because, not only does it increase one’s odds of survival, it has many advantages such as it makes you an independent person, it boosts your self confidence and makes you appreciate the outdoors. Learning survival skills comes with pros and cons and some of these cons can affect one's direct growth. It is still important to know survival skills, because it is important to develop and practice the common sense and intelligence required to survive in the wilderness.
