The main reason why he is a misfit to both the white and black community is the major difference he had. Michael had a problem with being black, poor, big in body size compared to others. In Wingate Christian School, he was the only black and easily distinct compared to the rich white students. Back in his familiar home, he is unwanted by his mother, people surrounding Michael in his neighborhood tease and taunt him, and he was taken away from his house. These factors led his character to be timid, antisocial, and very self-conscious of himself.
