BEYOND ALL LIMITS
At first they didn’t seem like much. Just some wood scraps lying on the floor of a garage. They were leftovers from making picture frames. They might be good for fireplace kindling wood, but most people would be tossing them in a trash pile. Not so Elliot Handler. He had been making picture frames with his business partner Harold Matson in a garage workshop. And as the scraps began stacking up in their business, Handler and his wife, Ruth, found a use for them in the making of furniture for dollhouses. That product moved them into the toy business that most of you will recognize by the company name Mattel, a multi-billion dollar corporation that has brought us Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels toy cars.

A shepherd boy named David becomes a king, a poor girl name Mary gives birth to the Savior of the world, a fisherman named Peter leads the start of the early church. People who originally appeared to have no value or status in the eyes of the world were used to further the Kingdom of God.
Today we’re going to have another “Up Close and Personal Encounter With Jesus” and see how five loaves and two fish fed thousands. A child’s lunch basket shows us how God can take what the world sees as insignificant to do great things through those who turn to him. What we may deem impossible can be a done deal if we allow God in the mix. And that takes us to our key takeaway of the day: God can work beyond the perceived limitations in our lives. For you notetakers in the crowd today I’ll repeat that: God can work beyond the perceived limitations in our lives.
To flesh out that teaching, we will look at three points brought forth through our John chapter six passage

First of all, the feeding of the 5,000 is the only miracle of Jesus recorded by all four gospel writers – Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Such commonality points to a major importance of this account in the life of Jesus. Basically, the story is the same in all four gospels, but there are a few differences that flesh out some of the details. For example, in the Matthew account, it mentions that the 5,000 fed were “men, besides women and children.” So the actual number fed could have been anywhere from 10,000 to 20,000, according to scholars. Our passage today is the only one that calls disciples out by name, noting that Jesus was testing Philip. Andrew is mentioned as finding the boy with the basket of bread and fish. We will incorporate a few details from the other gospel accounts as we unpack this John 6 verse

Throughout the novel “The Sun Also Rises,” by Ernest Hemingway, the characters are often represented as “lost” both mentally and physically, in negative and positive ways. This is evident when Brett announces, “I won’t be one of those bitches,” exclaiming that she is finally coming to realize who she wants to be and what she wants from a man(247). This is negative because she was “lost” and was abusing her self-worth proving that she was physically misusing her body, but mentally she thought she was smart enough to not be “one of those bitches.” The main character Jake however, was “lost” in a positive way as he thinks to himself, “It felt strange to be in France again. There was a safe, suburban feeling,” explaining that Jake felt comfort…

And going on from there: Leaves the impression that, after calling he encountered two more fishermen. It may appear to be just a pictorial way of making one episode out of two incidents which were historically separate. James the son of Zebedee: In the Gospel account of Mark, James is been described nine times (even though never by himself; it is always ‘Peter and James and John’ or imply that Matthew believed that Zebedee was married to Salome. It is interesting enough, that James the son of Zebedee and his brother are nowhere mentioned by name in the fourth Gospel. However, the son of Zebedee occurs in a list of disciples, and the two are gathering (v.21).”…

A legacy is a complicated thing, especially when it deals with reputation. One’s reputation is affected by subjective trends in popularity, and often has as much to do with the social climate at the time it is established as it has to do with the person. Jackson and Lee both undeniable have created legacies that rely on an idealized representation of their character. So far, this paper has discussed the various ways that Jackson and Lee distinguished themselves in the war, how they were perceived by the South during war, and examples of how manifestations of their legacies exist today. Still, the question remains: How did these legacies affect the understanding of the Civil War?…

Ronald J. Sider writes a compelling and thought-provoking book about affluent and wealthy Christians in a world that is getting increasing needy. One of his chapters covers the topic of economic relationships among God’s chosen people. After reading the chapter, I was surprised to see several differences among the Jerusalem church and the twenty-first-century church. I discovered that the early church was much more generous with their money and resources and this challenged me to think critically about my own personal wealth and how the community of wealthy believers are using their money. Sharing of money and wealth can be seen as early in the law but it wasn’t until Jesus’s time that the sharing really began and was lived out.…

Ragamuffin Gospel Reflection Reading the Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning was a challenge; while I agreed with his thoughts and feeling the style in which it was written I found to be very cumbersome. Then this feeling of being critical of the writing made me feel guilty because the subject and the topic is so important and many individuals give the book very high reviews. I much prefer a local Springfield, Missouri author named Jennifer Rothschild; Jennifer is a nationally renowned author and woman’s conference speaker living in the area with her husband who is on the faculty of Missouri State university. What makes Jennifer special is that while she is blind she shares amazing truths comparing her challenge to our own spiritual blindness…

An American writer, Elbert Hubbard, once said, “We are punished by our sins, not for them.” The seven deadly sins- an old system that describes humanity’s immoral faults and weaknesses- consists of pride, envy, gluttony, lust, sloth, wrath, and greed. The presence of sin is unwelcome but runs current into the lives of mankind, bringing havoc along its trail. In the 19th-century Russian novel, The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky, the little to nothing father and son relationship between the protagonists Fyodor and Dmitri crumbles as both Karamazovs antagonize each other with the seven deadly sins. Their alternating conflict ends abruptly when Fyodor is brutally murdered and Dmitri is wrongly accused of the crime.…
