Rona Maynard indirectly characterizes Laura as selfish and hypocritical through her words, thoughts, and actions. As Laura walks into school and hears the populars saying, “It’ll be a riot!” Laura immediately assumes that they were talking about her and goes on defense, thinking, “They were clods, the whole lot of them.” When she realizes that they were planning on picking on Rachel, she doesn't care about the teasing anymore. She is also characterized as selfish because at the end of the story, she chooses to partake in the bullying of somebody who considered her a friend rather than reject the card the Diane offers her and become an outcast.
