Character Analysis Of Will Tweedy's 'Cold Sassy Tree'

Will tells things from both his and other people’s perspective which is one reason he is a reliable narrator, even though he is a 14-year-old boy writing in a journal. Will Tweedy is a 14-year-old boy at the beginning of Cold Sassy Tree, when he is writing in his journal, he is telling the story 8 years later when he is 22 years old. It says on page one of the book: “That was eight years ago on a Thursday morning, when Grandpa Blakeslee was fifty-nine and I was fourteen.” Will tells the marriage of Grandpa and Miss Love from his perspective and of the family’s perspective when they all find out. The perspectives are more in depth as he is getting older. He writes down every detail, including Grandpa’s letter to the family about his funeral. If he didn’t mature as the story went on he probably wouldn’t have thought to write the letter down in his journal. In chapter 48, Will listens in on Grandpa and Miss Love, Grandpa is talking about how the Bible said ask and you shall receive and Grandpa is trying to explain it but he beats around the bush to try to explain it. Will in chapter 50, explains at Grandpa’s funeral what Grandpa meant about asking and receiving, although this shows that he was eavesdropping on Grandpa and Miss Love, this is a sign that he has gotten older because he is able to better explain what his grandpa couldn’t explain very well, he understands complex things that others might not. He was also asked by Grandpa in his letter to recite some Bible verses, an adult might ask this of a mature person, not an immature person.
