Tom is a mockingbird because he is harmless and kind. Tom was a nice man and did whatever he was ordered and needed to do. Harper Lee writes,"she was white, but she tempted a negro. She did something unspeakable. She kissed a black man. Not an old uncle, but a strong ground negro man. No code mattered at her before she broke it. It came crashing down afterwards."(212). This quote shows that being a black man or having interactions with them is a bad thing to do in Maycomb. Even though Tom is a hard working being he still gets looking down upon. But that is not the worst thing, people tried to kill him. For example, Harper Lee writes," They've gone," he said. "Get some sleep Tom, they won't bother you anymore."(128). This quote states that
