Charlotte Perkin Gilman uses the character as a literary device to put across the lack of communication between the storyteller, her spouse, and the society she is in. Throughout the story, the readers are revealed the result of a woman who is diagnosed with depression, hysteria, and nervousness, as well as her being anxious and unorganized with her thoughts. She then later becomes infatuated with the yellow wallpaper that is in her bedroom. Her infatuation and her brain are able to persuade her that there are individuals that are to be unseen behind the yellow wallpaper in her room. The wife also hides her desire of writing or doing something artistic due to her partner who claims it would relapse her case.
