Most people want to make a difference in life and to the world, and we all have different ways of doing it. For instance, some people economize on food or choose to donate clothes to the people and countries with low financial circumstances, while others travel to countries in voluntary work to help and make this difference to the poor people. One of those people is Lindsey. Her adventure and the voluntary work in Bangladesh are described in “The Royal Flush” by Lori Pollock from 2013.

Lindsey also tries to make this different. She wants better conditions of life to both the animals and the people. The message of the short story might therefore be to help others and sometimes maybe even place others needs before one’s own needs.
This volunteered work in another country gives Lindsey the possibility to put her education and the good intentions to good use, but quickly the reality brings her expectations down, which is seen as a contrast of the short story. Her ideological beliefs are being tested in Bangladesh. She wants to help the people, but she especially takes offence at the rickshaw system of public transport, which she also is against. “Rickshaw? I’m not comfortable with… with another human being pulling me like an animal—“ (p. 2, ll. 42-43).
Lindsey thinks that she is working on the project meant to “facilitate sustainable initiatives with a focus on water conservation“ (p. 2, ll. 60-61), but in reality she is expected to install toilets in an apartment building.
