He has to make the smart choices mainly about how the community could change for the better, and choices that prevent anything bad or traumatic from happening. As stated in the novel “The Giver” “We really need to protect people from wrong choices.” This quote explains that Jonas has to make wise and right choices in order to protect the citizens of the community from making the wrong choices. The novel also states that “It gives us wisdom, the Giver replied, without wisdom I could not fulfill my function of advising the Committee of Elders when they call upon me.” This quote explains that he has to make smart choices in order to become a good leader because the Committee of Elders will look up to him to make the important decisions that will impact the community in great ways. The novel also states that “The Committee of Elders sought my advice, The Giver said. “It made sense to them, too, but it was a new idea, and they came to me for wisdom.” This quote also explains that Jonas has to make wise choices based on the wisdom he receives from the memories because soon the Committee of Elders will go to him for wisdom and he has to become a good …show more content…

One way they are similar is that the way the leaders in both societies determine the difference between the right and wrong choice is by asking a specific person or group of people. According to the novel “The Giver” it states that “The Committee of Elders sought my advice….and they came to me for wisdom.”[Lowry, 140] This quote concludes that the Committee of Elders and the community ask the Giver to make the important decision because of how much wisdom he holds. Therefore the community looks up to the Giver. In our society they usually conduct a vote in congresss and that’s how they determine the difference between the wrong and right choice. These methods are also similar because both of the societies have a set of rules or laws that the

The community of The Giver did not ever provide the opportunity of learning the truth, as children were ‘contained’ from their birth. Jonas did not want to keep in the knowledge as Receiver of Memories because he was overjoyed by feelings. One of Jonas’ rules “Do not discuss your training with any other member of the community, including parents and Elders” (Lowry 86).
