Indifference Dialogue

Characters: Dylan (TV show host, explains indifference), Jack (Regular guy who doesn’t know anything about indifference.)

Setting: In the city, and it’s the afternoon.

At Rise: Jack is crossing the street.

JACK: (Sees an old lady is helped across the street by a nice boy) Aww, humanity is so great.

(Sound effect: Poof)

DYLAN: (Magically appears) Actually, no it isn’t.

JACK: Who the heck are you?

DYLAN: I’m Dylan, and you’re on my TV show: Dylan Ruins Everything. I’m going to tell you that humanity is actually terrible. It’s a little something called indifference.

JACK: Like, we’re all the same?

DYLAN: Wrong! If someone is indifferent, that means they don’t care. In fact, indifference is considered by some to be worse than actual evil.

DYLAN: Oh come on, there’s a homeless guy right there. (Dylan points and camera turns to reveal homeless man.) You don’t care.

JACK: But I’m talking to you right now. How am I supposed to be helping him?

DYLAN: That’s what they all say. One of the big reasons people are indifferent is because it doesn’t effect them, and they would have to go out of their normal routine in order to do something. When it doesn’t affect them, they can’t truly know what’s going on. Lots of people may have no idea what’s going on when it comes to things around the world. With all this you can see that it’s easy to be indifferent. Caring about something is tough, and if you care about everything, you’ll go insane.

JACK: (Listening thoughtfully) Okay…..

DYLAN: Then there’s deliberate indifference. This is when someone who’s being indifferent knows full well what’s going on. Back to the bullying example, someone might realize that someone’s being bullied, but maybe they’re like, ‘I don’t like you, so I’m going to let you get bullied.’ They know that harm will come to the victim, so in a way, they’re the friend of the enemy.

JACK: Man. Well It’s not like this has been happening forever. I bet it’s those gosh darn

Can you truly understand what’s going on? To you, is the word slavery arbitrary or does it mean something? You might think that being a slave means they have to hard work for the whole day, have bad meals, and then aren’t allowed to do anything else. Well, they have crazy hours, are tortured and beaten if they do something slightly wrong, hardly get any food, and don’t get any money, even though if they did they wouldn’t be able to do anything with it.

JACK: Harsh. But even if I knew what was going on 100%, or anyone else for that matter, I still probably couldn’t do anything.

DYLAN: That’s because you have no leverage. Do you know what leverage is?

JACK: (Sighs and thinks) Like pulling a lever?

DYLAN: Not really. Leverage is your ability to do something. You are an average guy who needs to make a living, right?

JACK: Right.

DYLAN: This means that when stopping slavery, you have very little leverage. All you can really do is donate, volunteer, raise awareness, and things like that. Someone who would have lots of leverage, however, would be a leader of one of those countries. He can end slavery there like that (snaps).

JACK: So let me get this straight, indifference is when you don’t care about something.

DYLAN: Right.

JACK: And it’s absolutely horrible.

DYLAN: Right.

JACK: And you should try to do what you can to stop it.

DYLAN: (With excitement) Yes! Exactly! So, want lunch?

JACK: I think we’re done here. (Walks

Indifference is “not a response,” Indifference is “tempting,” Indifference is “not a beginning,” Indifference is “an end,” Indifference is “not only a sin, it is a punishment.” Famous poet, and Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel in his speech, “The Perils of Indifference”, argues and claims that indifference is “A strange and unnatural state in which the lines blur between light and darkness, dusk and dawn, crime and punishment, cruelty and compassion, good and evil.” Wiesel developed his claim by defining what indifference means. Then he gives examples to help support what it is, to make it clearer for the audience, so they can understand the concept of it. Finally, he uses examples of what has happened in our society, to add a more of a visual…

Frederick Douglass argues in his narrative that slavery dehumanizes both the slave and the slave master generating a dependency for each other. For slave’s, this dehumanization came in the form of having their name, culture and personal identity stripped away from them and for the slave master, the inability to function when deprived of slave assistance. In this essay, I will use Frederick Douglass’s narrative; along with, first-hand accounts to demonstrate how both the slave and the slave master became dehumanized through the institution of slavery. Using Frederick Douglass’s narrative, I will explain how slaves became exploited for cheap labor by the slave master creating a society depended on slaves.…

There is a proverb that demonstrates this statement much clearly: “Out of sight, out of mind”. This quote is usually applied to a situation where people cannot meet each other, and they gradually reflect less or forget about each other. People tend to care less about an object or situation that occurs far away both from physically and psychologically; it is a human nature phenomenon. For instance, most of the teenagers learn that there are many refugees, orphans, and people die of hunger in the world in school. However, even though they understand and feel a tiny compassion towards those people, only a few, maybe none of, teenagers would actually practice or take an action to help those poor people.…

Case Study-Jack • Do you think that Jack’s current unwillingness to become vulnerable to others out of his fear of “being dependent on them and trapped by their love” has much to do with his mother’s unconditional love? Although we don’t have much information about Jack’s early years, his difficulty establishing intimate relationships would point to issues at the oral stage by Freud’s interpretation. I think Jack’s relationship issues stem from his relationships with both of his parents.…

“Indifference is always the friend of the enemy, for it benefits the aggressor -- never its victim, whose pain is magnified when he or she feels forgotten” (Wiesel 2). When trying to get a powerful point or a message across its more effective to use certain techniques and certain words. One influential man mastered this skill, Elie Wiesel. Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor and Nobel Laureate, gave a powerful speech on April 12th 1999 in Washington D.C. as part of the Millennium Lecture series, hosted by President Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton. His speech touched on his story of survival as well as points about indifference and his opinion and feelings about it.…

Throughout all of history, as early as records show, only one slave revolt was successful; the Haitian Revolution. This rebellion was unique and complex, which is why it was so auspicious. The Haitian revolution was so successful because of the large ratio of slaves to white men, the experience slaves had with rebellions, the preoccupation France had with its homeland and, the slaves finally had allies to revolt with. Imagine being worked close to death every day in the blistering heat, waiting your entire life for the one day you can pay off your debt and be a free man.…
